The multi-institution backup ensures that neither the owner nor – upon the owner's death – the heirs can lock themselves out:

  1. Order a new phone, create a new phone key and set up a new MISC® vault.

  1. Order new hardware, create a new hardware key and set up a new MISC® vault.
  2. Transfer funds from the old to the new vault using the phone and the collaborative custody partner's key
Loss of phone and hardware (keys)
  1. Restore the phone key using the cloud backup and the recovery contact.
  2. Follow the instructions for lost hardware (key).
Inheritance scenario
  1. Add your beneficiaries' or an executor's key while you are alive.
  2. Your beneficiaries or executor will be able to trigger the inheritance process when you pass away.

Because the backup is distributed among various institutions, no single institution ever gains sole power of disposal.
